A TESTAMENT TO THE LONGEVITY OF BORDEAUX

“One of Bordeaux’s greatest virtues is its ability to transcend time. Since its earliest days, Bordeaux’s natural inclination towards longevity coupled with crowd-pleasing volume has enabled devotees to build cellars and plunder mature vintages with almost wanton abandon.” Neil Martin Vinous Media.

On a recent buying trip we came across these two stunners from Domaine de Viaud, the Domaine has a reputation for stocking plenty of back vintages and being reasonable with pricing. The wines are simply beautiful, a delight to drink and testament to the longevity of good Bordeaux.

1998 Domaine de Viaud – Lalande de Pomerol Bordeaux
$54.95 – 6 bottles per case – 20 six packs available
Similar to the 2000 vintage but seems to have more power on the palate. A charming bouquet that sits nicely between secondary and tertiary aromas, blackberry, cassis, wet cedar, crushed petals, leather and tobacco, all nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but still grippy tannins, black tea & spice on the finish.

2010 Domaine de Viaud – Lalande de Pomerol Bordeaux
$54.95 – 6 bottles per case – 20 six packs available
The 2010 has a fragrant bouquet: blackberry and forest floor, a touch of black truffle, clean and pure perfumed fruit mixed with sage & sandalwood. The palate is medium-bodied with noticeable velvety tannin,  good structure and with plenty of tobacco and creamy nuances on the finish. There’s plenty of substance here.
