“PERHAPS THE BEST AMARONE EVER MADE” JS

Feature / Wednesday, February 17th, 2021

We’ve managed to get our hands on a small but beautiful library collection of Amarone direct from the cellars of Zenato.

Zenato is one of the historic names in Valpolicella. The estate makes a wide range of wines, but truly excels with Amarone. A recent vertical tasting of Zenato’s Amarone Riserva Sergio Zenato going back to 1980 was eye-opening for many reasons, not the least of which was seeing just how well the wines age.” Wine Advocate

2006 Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico.

95 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. $89.95 per bottle – 6 packs. 8 cases available. Zenato’s 2006 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a massive, towering wine bursting with black cherries, dried flowers, herbs and leather. The wine’s sheer concentration and richness have been achieved while maintaining considerable grace, even if this isn’t the most subtle Amarone readers will come across. Still, it’s impossible to deny the wine’s personality and class. This is a great effort from Zenato. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. 94 Points Wine Spectator #36 Top 100 2010.Wonderful aromas of black licorice and blueberry lead to a full body, with juicy, round tannins. Luscious and decadent. Might be better on toast! A gorgeous wine, this is the real deal for Amarone. Why wait? But a little bottle age should really bring it together.

2013 Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico.

94 Points James Suckling. $67.95 per bottle – 6 packs. 6 cases available. A rich and layered red with chocolate, berry and cherry character. Spicy undertone. Hints of dried rose petal. Full body, layered and very fruity. Dried fruits, too. Finishes with chocolate and hazelnut. It’s all about balance. Drink or hold.

Located on the shores of Lake Garda, Zenato is one of the most historic and important wine identities in northern Italy. Over the years, the Zenato family has played an essential role in shaping the qualitative renaissance in the region. Sergio Zenato Riserva Collection is the estate’s top-shelf wine, made only in the best vintages, representing a selection of the best grapes from old vines, production is miniscule and the wines are released when ready to drink.

2013 Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato.

99 Points James Suckling. $139.95 per bottle – 3 packs . 16 cases available. This is a huge and impressive wine, but somehow graceful and subtle. It packs an eclectic array of brambleberry compote, violet essence, eucalyptus, oyster shell, pure iodine, vanilla, resin, tar, cassis, plum liqueur and hot stones. You can only stand back in awe as one shade of fruit appears after the next and a barrage of tannin coats your mouth. Yet, this is gentle, agile and flowing. Nevertheless, its main attraction remains its unashamed, monumental power and muscularity. A haunting wine that sends chills down your spine. An epoch-defining wine for Veneto that harks back to the legends of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Perhaps the best Amarone ever made. Impossible to resist now, but better in 2022.

2012 Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato.

94 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate / 96 James Suckling. $139.95 per bottle –  3 packs. 12 cases available. This is a broad, thick wine with big bones and an extremely full-bodied approach. The 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato presents a thick wall of sweet plum and cherry syrup with more enticing notes of spice, tar and smoke at the back. The house blend at Zenato sees 80% Corvina and 10% Rondinella with 10% Oseleta and Croatina. The grapes are laid out to dry for 120 days. This is the estate’s top-shelf wine, made only in the best vintages.

94 Points James Suckling. $159.95 per bottle – 3 packs. 20 cases available. Tiis Amarone shows shaved-chocolate, dried-strawberry and burnt-orange undertones. Full-bodied, round and juicy. Soft tannins. Very intense and flavorful. A complex, layered riserva Amarone.

2007 Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato.

94 Robert Parker / 94 Points James Suckling. $169.95 per bottle – 3 packs. 20 cases available. Loads of dark fruits, spices and shaved chocolate here. Turns minerally and pretty. Full body with soft and silky tannins and lots of spicy, dried fruit character. Balanced and very pretty. So delicious now but will improve with age.

2006 Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato.

95 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate / 98 James Suckling. $179.95 per bottle – 3 packs. 20 cases available. The 2006 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato wraps around the palate with layers of mocha, espresso, Morello cherries, spices, mint and new leather. It is a wonderfully plush, expressive wine loaded with aromatic and flavor complexity. There is plenty of inner perfume and sweetness, but what impresses most is the wine’s sense of structure and length. Darker notes flesh out on the finish adding a baritone register to the fruit that is highly appealing. This is a fabulous showing from Zenato. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

The wines are due to arrive late March, reach out to secure your allocation.
