|For many winemakers and vintners, California’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage is quite simply the finest of their careers. ‘I can now die happy as a winemaker’, remarked Tod Mostero of Dominus Estate: ‘I’d love to see another year as good as this, but I can settle for just one’. |
Up and down the state, the refrain is the same. Even veteran winemaker Ric Forman, who celebrates his fortieth vintage in the Valley this year, contentedly acknowledges that 2013 ranks as ‘one of the good ones!’
The raw material in 2013 was the best we’ve ever seen’, reflects Thomas Brown, one of the Napa Valley’s most celebrated consultants and winemaker for Schrader and Maybach. And Brown’s assessment is echoed by growers and winemakers in other appellations such as the Santa Cruz Mountains and Sonoma County. Decanter Magazine.
Introducing Viluko Vineyards:
Viluko Vineyards is a 22 acre rocky-hillside vineyard in Sonoma’s wild Mayacamas Mountains. Perched between 600 and 1100 feet, classic Bordeaux varietals thrive in the unique range of alluvial and volcanic soils.
Pedro and Karen Arroyo founded Viluko in 2006, bringing together a history of Chilean winemaking and some good old-fashioned back-to-the-land, 1970’s California attitude. Winemaker Tim Milos (formerly research Enologist at Opus One and Winemaker at Cliff Lede) has shared their vision since the beginning, crafting terroir-driven wines with minimal intervention and traditional techniques.
At Viluko, they farm organically because they believe that it’s the most responsible way to promote a healthy, sustainable environment for the vines and community.
2013 Viluko Vineyards – Cabernet Sauvignon -Sonoma County – $67.95 per bottle – 12 bottle case or six packs
The estate Cabernet is grown from a variety of clones on two exposed peaks, each distinguished by their topography and soils of fractured rock or volcanic uplift. This diversity results in a supple balance between deep aromatics of cinnamon and clove with a palate of dark berries, cranberry, and cocoa. The 2013 vintage reflects its warm growing year giving a rich, refined, and deeply concentrated wine whose tannins soften upon decanting.
“Mountain-like tannins make for a robust, powerful and concentrated palate that shows a leathery texture. Sage, black pepper and black currant spice up richer elements of dark chocolate and caramelized oak.” 90 Points Wine Enthusiast.
