Run don’t Walk for this decade old Cabernet from Bodega’s Weinert – $27.95 per bottle
For readers familiar with Rioja, Weinert is the López de Heredia of Mendoza, making wonderfully traditional wines and sticking to its principles. This savoury, mature, old woodaged red is a case in point, showing a combination of ripeness, figgy fruit sweetness, acidity, minerality and savoury tannins. Intriguing.
Drink Date: 2018-26. Score – 93. (Tim Atkin, MW, timatkin.com, Argentina Special Report 2018)
Acclaim for the wines of Bodegas Weinert
“I visited the Weinert bodega on my very first visit to Argentina in 1989 and am told it is still an extraordinary building, more reminiscent of another age than a modern temple to winemaking technology” Jancis Robinson
“The Chateau Musar of Argentina” Bartholomew Broadbent
“Weinert is certainly old, and even old world, and to these two we can add “old school.” To say they make wine in traditional ways may even be understating the case” Vinography
“At Weinert, “barrique” is a four letter word” Vinography
