|Domaine Laurent Cognard:|
Laurent Cognard began Domaine bottling his family’s wines in 1997 and today farms 26 acres of vines in the appellations of Montagny, Mercurey, and Pouilly-Loché. The specialty of the Domaine is white wine, though a small amount of Mercurey rouge is also produced. The vineyards are farmed lutte raisonée “reasoned struggle.”
The emphasis is on manual methods including ploughing, green harvest and if necessary, thinning of leaves and bunches . Harvesting is manual and all wines are barrel fermented ostensibly in large 500 litre casks which lends complexity and structure. Yields are kept low through elimination of double buds and green harvest if necessary. The wines are bottled after 12 – 15 months.
To say that these wines offer startling value is an understatement in the current Burgundian climate. The white drinks like a wine twice its price and the red is a powerful, rich, seductive wine that shrugs off its simple Bourgogne moniker.
Domaine Laurent Cognard Bourgogne Blanc – 2022 – $41.95 per bottle – 12 packs
Aromas of pear, baked apple, citrus zest , spice, white flowers and nuts. The Cognard 2022 Bourgogne Blanc is a stunner, a medium to full-bodied, ample and radiant wine that’s layered and concentrated, with racy acids and a precise, saline finish. Drinks like a 1er Cru.
Domaine Laurent Cognard Bourgogne Rouge – 2022 – $41.95 per bottle – 12 packs
Bursting from the glass with scents of black cherries, red berries, spices, licorice and herbal tones, the 2022 Bourgogne from Laurent Cognard elevates its humble Bourgogne Rouge status to another level. Medium-bodied, bright and incisive, with lovely elegance and purity of fruit. Refined, complex and weighty. Drinking now but can hold for a decade.
6 bottles of each wine can also be packed to make 12.
