DOMAINE HUMBERT FRERES

The 2021’s from Domaine Humbert Freres:

Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert ( Emmanuel Pictured above) have been running the family estate since 1989. The two brothers cultivate seven hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin , in the pure tradition of the great Pinot Noirs and the great winegrowers of Gevrey: Dugat, Rousseau, Mortet, Charlopin… The Humbert estate only produces Pinot Noir harvested near the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation in village appellations, premier crus and a grand cru: Charmes -Chambertin . The estate’s wines have a pronounced and solid colour, the result of a longer extraction, which gives them a density and power characteristic of the great Pinot Noirs of the Côte de Nuits. All of the estate ‘s wines reveal themselves perfectly after a few years of aging. The Humberts, who are typically among the earliest pickers in Gevrey-Chambertin and are known for their precise wines.

Domaine Humbert Freres 2021 Bourgogne Cote d’Or – 60 bottles

$69.95 per bottle

From vineyards in the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon, the 2021 Bourgogne Côte d’Or exhibits aromas of sweet berries and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and seamless palate built around lively acids and melting tannins.

Domaine Humbert Freres 2021 Gevrey Chambertin VV – 96 bottles

$140.95 per bottle

“More structured and concentrated than the Fixin, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes delivers notes of dark berries, cherries and spices, followed by a medium-bodied palate built around powdery tannins and lively acids. Old vines are a strong suit at this address, as they are with their cousins, the Dugats.” 90 RP

Domaine Humbert Freres 2018 Gevrey Chambertin VV in Magnum 1500ml – 24 bottles

$274.95 per bottle

“The Les Marchais lieu-dit at the bottom of the Combe de Lavaux supplies half of the fruit for this excellent Gevrey village, with the rest coming from 14 other parcels. Ambitiously concentrated, with 70% new oak, serious tannins, ample concentration and crunchy acidity, this is a wine with more gas in the tank, as it were.” Drinking Window 2022 – 2028. 93 Decanter.

Domaine Humbert Freres 2021 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot – 36 bottles

$279.95 per bottle

“The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot derives from the coolest premier cru in the commune, with some 80% active calcium and a mere 20 centimeters of soil. Exhibiting scents of red berries, potpourri and spices, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, with melting tannins, tangy acids and an intensely saline finish.” 91-92 RP

What is a great vintage?

“Burgundy’s 2021 vintage lends that question particular pertinence. Up and down the Côte d’Or, producers rhapsodized about a vintage that they have little incentive to hype. Demand so vastly exceeds supply at the region’s top addresses that the much-diminished yields of 2021 mean that even only lackluster consumer interest will make allotting allocations a nightmare. Yet for Thierry Pillot in Chassagne-Montrachet, 2021 recalls the Burgundies of yesteryear, saying they are “the wines I’ve always dreamed of making.” For Bertrand Dugat (Humbert’s Neighbour), the vintage “was like a breath of fresh air; it woke me up and gave me renewed energy.” For Cécile Tremblay, 2021 is “a return, at last, to Pinot Noir.” As ever, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier summed it up succinctly when he said, “These are the wines I want to drink.” RP
