MOUNTAIN CLIMBING

Napa Balloon

“I believe you can make a case — not airtight, mind you, but a pretty good one — that Spring Mountain District is the most unrecognized source of great wine in Napa Valley today.”
“There’s a distinction to the wines from this small zone. They have that “smack of Californian earth” that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote about. Every red variety conveys intense licorice, earthy and spice scents.”  Wine Spectator

Robert Keenan Winery is located near the top of Spring Mountain District, high above the beautiful Napa Valley. The Keenan estate is set on the site of a defunct turn of the century winery renovated by Robert Keenan in 1974. The mountain estate is comprised of 48 acres of vineyard, and a historic stone winery. Keenan has been producing wine since 1977, and is known for making small lots of intense, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon.

Robert Keenan Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2018 – 96 Points Antonio Galloni – Vinous Media. $189.95 per bottle – six packs.
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is such a great example of Spring Mountain. Powerful and virile, the classically-built Reserve packs a serious punch. I would give it a few years to soften, but it is super-impressive, even in the early going. Crushed red berry fruit, iron, dried flowers, mint and spice lead into the long, sculpted finish.”

“Bold and juicy, Keenan’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is super-expressive today. Dark cherry, plum, grilled herbs, mocha, spice and licorice are all front and center.
The 2018 is deep and fleshy yet retains a classic, mid-weight feel that works so well. Drink it over the next decade.”
