Aromas recalling ripe forest berry, eucalyptus and dark culinary spice mingle with a whiff of botanical herb on the fantastic 2021 Castelletto from Mauro Veglio. Elegantly structured and linear, the palate has nervous tension that underscores red cherry, cranberry, licorice and ground clove. Taut, refined tannins provide support. Still youthfully austere, give it time to fully unwind and develop. Drink 2031–2041.

The steep, predominantly east-facing slopes of Castelletto have recently become more highly sought after, but Mauro Veglio was the first producer to include the name on the label in 1996. Sweet spice and toasty top notes reveal barrique ageing (30% new) but these become well embedded in generous forest berries. The palate is taut and lively, and layers of fine, chalky-textured tannins knit tightly together to provide an elegant yet authoritative frame. There is also plenty of acid tension. Mint and mocha persist on the finish.
